Hydrosols and Essential Waters Made From Your Kitchen

with Alice Encinas-Duvernell, Natural Cosmetic Designer & Consultant

Sunday, April 3rd from 1-5pm

In this introduction to the medicinal and cosmetic virtues of hydrosols, students will learn how to make 100% pure hydrosols from scratch with easily accessible plant material and kitchen tools. Hydrosols are considered to be the future of aromatherapy. The reason why is that their pH is very balanced, and easy on the skin; they are much safer to use than essential oils. They can be used safely on elders, children and babies and people with fragrance intolerance. Hydrosols can be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, rejuvenating, toning, and can help in the treatment of hair loss, depression and anxiety, digestion, teeth and gum problems, insomnia and skin problems. Most hydrosols can be used externally and internally.

Students will also experience and learn about the properties and uses of 6 different hydrosols for the skin, the body and the mind. They will be introduced to many exceptional samples of more rare and exotic hydrosols. The teacher will discuss about how and when to pick plants, what plant parts are the most aromatic, the good manufacturing and sterilization process, pH levels, as well as, blends and bonus recipes.

Participants will take home a:

  • 4 oz. bottle of freshly made hydrosol
  • 1 oz custom made, hydrosol based, facial mask
  • This class is designed for the herbalist, gardener, cosmetic crafter, healer and cook! Hydrosols are an amazing product to enhance one's life. Feel free to bring hydrosols that you love and small cuttings of your most aromatic plants to show the rest of the class.

Herbal safety, toxicity and risk will also be explored.

Analyzing Scientific Studies

with Donna Odierna, DrPH, MS, RH(AHG)

Sunday, April 17, 2016 from 10-5pm

Reports of new research findings seem to get a lot of media coverage, especially when it comes to healthcare. But are the conclusions or the methods used in those studies valid? What constitutes a good scientific study? In this class, we will learn to critically review and evaluate scientific research. This class is geared toward herbalists and other holistic healthcare professionals.

Dr. Odierna's research focuses on social exclusion and health equity. She has particular interest in how research itself can function as a social determinant of health by virtue of the questions we ask, the populations we include or leave out, and the way we use the findings to develop practice guidelines and health policy.

Seaweed Harvest

Seaweed Harvesting Trip

with Trish Gallagher and Catherine Abby Rich

Friday thru Sunday, May 20th to 22nd, 2016

Seaweed is a true superfood loaded with more vitamins, minerals and trace elements than any land plant. The finest chefs know that when the tide is out the table is set! Seaweed is used in cooking, in herbal supplements, and in skin and bath care products. In addition to its nutritional value, seaweed excels at pulling toxins from our bodies, including heavy metals.

In this weekend camping trip, Trish will discuss how to identify sea vegetables (botany) and the health benefits of the many seaweeds we find growing on the California coastline along with the ethics of wildcrafting. We will harvest sea vegetables as a group at low tide in an unpolluted area off the Mendocino coast. We'll incorporate seaweed cuisine into many of the dishes we'll enjoy over the weekend. You’ll come away with seaweed you’ve harvested as well as recipes for creating your own seaweed delights.

Trish Gallagher is the owner of Wild Devocean and has been consciously harvesting seaweed for over a decade. She wildcrafts fresh Northern California sea vegetation to incorporate into delicious and highly nutritive snacks and culinary dishes in addition to her own custom-blended superfood supplements. Trish also offers wellness consultations through Middletown Massage and Acupuncture Collective in Middletown, California. For more about Trish, visit: middletownmassage.net.

Assisting on this trip is Catherine Abby Rich. In addition to her role as core faculty member at Gathering Thyme's School of Western Herbalism, she is the creator of "Combining Forces," an herbal line of flower essences, face and body care products as well as a Quantum Biofeedback educator. with Alice Encinas-Duvernell, Natural Cosmetic Designer & Consultant

Saturday, December 3rd from 10am to 4pm

This class is an introduction to alternative ways of deeply cleansing the skin with oil formulas and hydro-based cleansers. This ancient, greatly prized, but forgotten method is an excellent substitute to replace overly abrasive and soap-based facial cleansers. These modern methods of cleansing the skin often result in outbreaks or excessive dryness. Alice will explain the process of how to make efficient recipes based on a choice of ingredients specifically chosen for each skin type. In the second part of the class, students will be initiated into the art of making natural, high-quality hydro-tonic toners with botanical ingredients, cosmeceuticals, hydrosols, and hydroxy-acids from fruits and natural acids. These toners will procure in-depth cleansing, which refines and tones the skin and reduces open pores. Students will create their own master recipe spreadsheet and blend a water-based toner and an oil cleanser, based on their own particular skin types. This recipe will also be custom scented with organic essential oil blends.

Sterilization & Standard Good Manufacturing Practices: Level 1

with Alice Encinas-Duvernell, Natural Cosmetic Designer & Consultant

Sunday, January 15th 2017, 9am to 12pm

A GMP (good manufacturing process) is a system for ensuring that products are consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards. It is designed to minimize the risks involved in any herbal or cosmeceutical production that cannot be eliminated through testing the final product.

GMP’s cover all aspects of production from the starting materials, sterilization processes, preparation of premises and equipment to the training and personal hygiene of staff. Detailed, written procedures are essential for each process that could affect the quality of the finished product. These methods are important to put in practice in any business that involves products that are internally taken, topically applied or even sprayed in the air or on surfaces. This “standardization” of your procedures gives great tools to protect your customers and your business, but also have a great value in the situation of an FDA audit. The teacher will share a database system and sample sheets in a organized binder to provide documented templates that will allow correct procedures to be documented, showing that they are consistently followed at each step in the manufacturing process - every time a product is made.

A great class for anyone thinking of creating a business around medicinal extracts, food products, cosmetics, but also the business owner that would like to put in place a GMP practice in their growing company.
