Insights into Diet and Digestion from the Ayurvedic Perspective with Simone deWinter of Marin Ayurveda

A Four Part Series: Tuesday Nights from 7-9 on Sept. 30, Oct. 7, 14 & 21

Ayurveda has a very nuanced way of relating to foods, different from the modern nutritionist's approach. Instead of relating to food groups and vitamin and mineral content, it considers the taste and energy of a food, and emphasizes the ability to digest and assimilate its nutrients. How does the quality of each considered taste affect us chemically? Does a food heat us up or cool us down? What is the post-digestive effect of a food?

In this class series, we will create an intimacy with our digestive systems, and a basic understanding of the quality of different foods, herbs and spices, and what they do in our bodies. Each class will focus on visualization, guided meditation, and lecture. You will receive many practical tips and recipes, so that Ayurveda becomes a familiar daily choice.

Simone de Winter has studied yoga and Ayurveda for over twenty years, both in India and the United States. For the last eleven years she has practiced Ayurveda in Marin County. Her website is: marinayurveda.com

COST: $120 for the series or $35 for each individual class

Matthew Wood

HERBAL APPRENTICESHIP WITH MATTHEW WOOD!
Forgotten Energetics of Traditional Western Herbalism:
The Six Tissue States in Relation to the Organ Systems

A Six Weekend Intensive for Intermediate and Advanced Students
with Matthew Wood MSc (Herbal Medicine), Registered Herbalist (AHG)

Six Weekends: October 4-5, November 15-16. 2015 dates: January 24-25, February 7-8, March 7-8 & April 4-5

In this class we will learn to understand the 'personality' and specific uses of herbal remedies. Every plant has a central, unifying intelligence which expresses through it's chemistry, uses, appearance, and taste. The Six Tissue States, an energetic system of Western Herbalism was largely forgotten by the late twentieth century. It is eminently useful and provides the logic behind so much that we do in modern herbal medicine. Matthew will be teaching specific indications for herbal application, the energetics of Greek medicine and nineteenth century botanical physicians, in relationship to the major organ systems. He will discuss this method and system over six weekends, giving plants, cases, and diagnostic tips for illustrations. A basic knowledge of western herbalism is recommended as this class will be geared toward intermediate and advanced students.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn from an internationally-known teacher of herbalism.

Matthew Wood has been a practicing herbalist since 1982 and is a renowned inspirational lecturer and author of several herb books including The Book of Herbal Wisdom and The Earthwise Herbal. He is a member of the American Herbalists Guild and has earned his Masters of Science degree from the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine. Matthew lives in Wisconsin and we are so delighted and honored to have him teach here at Gathering Thyme. For more information about Matthew, visit his website: www.matthewwoodherbs.com

COST: $1,500. A $500 deposit is required to hold your space with the remainder due prior to the event. If necessary, payment plans are available on a limited basis and must be discussed prior to enrollment. (NOTE: Each individual weekend is also available at $300/weekend. A Rejuvenating Fall Cleanse

with Simone deWinter of Marin Ayurveda

October 4th thru 16th

During seasonal transitions, especially spring and fall, Ayurveda recommends doing a cleanse to remove any accumulation from the season before and to prepare for the season to come. In fall we focus on removing excess heat, showing up as headaches, migraines, skin rashes, irritability and inflammation that accumulated during the summer when we are exposed to a strong and burning sun. A cleanse will give your digestive system a rest, will remove toxins from your body, will support your immune system, will leave you feeling rested and rejuvenated, and if done with intention, will allow for new insights into old habits and emotional patterns.

It is a great gift to yourself to create space on a regular basis for rest, self-care, and introspection. These are highly recommended during this cleanse... create some space in your life. It is recommended that you lighten your work load during the day, and keep your evening and weekend activities to a minimum. During the middle Saturday of this cleanse it will be necessary to stay home, and highly recommended to be at home on the following Sunday as well.

Cleansing in the Ayurvedic tradition can be considered a deep tissue cleanse, unlike fasting or juice fasting. It uses ghee, taken internally, to mobilize toxins from our fat tissues, where they typically are. We will eat two to three very simple meals per day to sustain energy - plenty of directions and recipes will be provided. The elimination of the mobilized toxins will happen in a “purge”, during the middle Saturday of the cleanse, by taking a large amount of laxative and then eliminating a lot. It will feel good! After that we will rejuvenate, slowly return to strength and good digestive function, with special herbs and foods. For women, it is not recommended to do this cleanse while menstruating.

In this group setting, via a private facebook page, you will have the opportunity to connect with other people and share the experiences of doing a cleanse, get support from each other, and ask questions to your Ayurvedic practitioner, Simone de Winter.

Simone de Winter has studied yoga and Ayurveda for over twenty years, both in India and the United States. For the last eleven years she has practiced Ayurveda in Marin County. Her website is: marinayurveda.com

COST: $155 to $275. The cost varies depending on the options you choose and includes three group meetings by phone, membership of a private Facebook page, and the cleanse protocol, which includes many meal recipes. Optional are herbal and other supplies.

WHEN: The cleanse will take place from October 4 through October 16. We will meet on the phone on Saturday, October 4, at 9am, on Thursday, October 9, at 6pm, and again on Monday, October 13, at 6pm.

Plant Journeying Series

with Judy Lieblein, Shamanic Practitioner, Herbalist, Animal Communicator and Reiki Master

October 11th and November 1st from 1:30 to 4pm

A plant’s story, medicine and magic is available to us at all times and in a variety of ways.

In this series, we will explore the different ways plants weave their magic through the telling of their story in relation to their cultural uses, appearance, habitat and energetic make-up. A direct experience of journeying with the plant thru meditation, ingesting a small dose of tincture, flower essence and/or tea and a plant attunement will further foster the connection. There will be time for the integration of this knowledge through the sharing of our experiences and/or journaling. This is plant spirit medicine!

For each class we will open our minds, hearts and senses to new worlds and possibilities through one plant. Join us for an empowering, fun and enlightening way to access our own inherent wisdom and deepen our connection to ourselves and the world around us. No experience is necessary. Class size is limited to ten. Please bring a journal.

October 11th - Angelica (Angelica archangelica/californica) - Angelica is believed to be one of the few medicinal herbs originating in the Northern Hemisphere that survived the Ice Age 8-10 thousand years ago. Still thriving today, Angelica’s uses as a food and medicine are broadly used. One of the most intoxicating beautiful scented flowers to come across Angelica’s message is hard to miss. Come journey with Angelica and see where this long-time star child wants to lead you.

November 1st - California Spikenard/Ginseng (Aralia californica) - Aralia loves to have it’s feet wet! And, if you have ever hiked in West Marin County near any of the numerous shaded creeks you have most certainly seen this outrageously magnificent plant that grows up to 9 feet tall. The large broad leaves almost 3 feet long and the spectacular clusters of star shaped flowers lure one into a magical and peaceful world where stress doesn’t exist. Come journey with Aralia and reconnect with your strong, natural flow.

How to Journey Class.
This is a quick primer for those with no prior journeying experience and for those who would like additional support or have questions regarding journeying . This class is offered 30 min before the Plant Journey class.
