HERBAL APPRENTICESHIP WITH MATTHEW WOOD!
Forgotten Energetics of Traditional Western Herbalism:
The Six Tissue States in Relation to the Organ Systems

A Six Weekend Intensive for Intermediate and Advanced Students
with Matthew Wood MSc (Herbal Medicine), Registered Herbalist (AHG)

Remainining Weekends/2015 dates: Jan. 24-25, Feb. 7-8, Mar. 7-8, Apr. 11-12
Each weekend can be taken individually

In this class we will learn to understand the 'personality' and specific uses of herbal remedies. Every plant has a central, unifying intelligence which expresses through it's chemistry, uses, appearance, and taste. The Six Tissue States, an energetic system of Western Herbalism was largely forgotten by the late twentieth century. It is eminently useful and provides the logic behind so much that we do in modern herbal medicine. Matthew will be teaching specific indications for herbal application, the energetics of Greek medicine and nineteenth century botanical physicians, in relationship to the major organ systems. He will discuss this method and system over six weekends, giving plants, cases, and diagnostic tips for illustrations. A basic knowledge of western herbalism is recommended as this class will be geared toward intermediate and advanced students.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn from an internationally-known teacher of herbalism.

Matthew Wood has been a practicing herbalist since 1982 and is a renowned inspirational lecturer and author of several herb books including The Book of Herbal Wisdom and The Earthwise Herbal. He is a member of the American Herbalists Guild and has earned his Masters of Science degree from the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine. Matthew lives in Wisconsin and we are so delighted and honored to have him teach here at Gathering Thyme. For more information about Matthew, visit his website: www.matthewwoodherbs.com

Review by Herbalist, Margi Flint: I have taught methods of holistic diagnosis for Western herbalists for many years with Matthew Wood. He contributed to the development of my own work on holistic diagnosis in The Practicing Herbalist. My constant observation of his insightful pulse taking over two decades co-teaching he now magically puts in print. Phyllis D. Light has also been a long admired herbalist. I now ravenously take in the Southern Blood theories. The joy of reading three weathered herbalists’ descriptions shared in Traditional Western Herbalism and Pulse Evaluation is invaluable. This ancient tool for assessment is approachable and shared in delightfully conversational tone. Smatterings of case studies bring life to pulse descriptions. Tying the energetics of the pulse to well described herbs is a blessing. Both Matthew and his co-author, Phyllis D. Light, are legendary for the insights they bring into modern practice from the older traditions of Western herbalism. As Matt says “When the history is filled in it is apparent that we had a coherent system of energetics based on knowledge of tissue states, organ-affinities, thermoregulation, detoxification, specificity, and many other ingredients, all of which make up a comprehensive system of practice – and a tradition.” Who else writes a book you can take to bed ending your day with valuable usable knowledge, a good story and a giggle? This book will be a classic for many years to come.

Plant Journeying Series

with Judy Lieblein, Shamanic Practitioner, Herbalist, Animal Communicator and Reiki Master

Saturdays Jan. 31, Feb. 21, Mar. 21 from 1:30-4pm. Each class may be taken individually

A plant’s story, medicine and magic is available to us at all times and in a variety of ways. This Winter, we will focus on a few of the most powerful, beloved and treasured plants of all time ~ Cacao, Roses and one of my personal allies Yellow Pond Lily. All Bliss Medicines! Winter is the perfect time to explore and experience the deeper states and healing these plants can bring. Come join us for a Winter Journey in Bliss medicine.

In each class, we will explore the different ways plants weave their magic through the telling of their story in relation to their cultural uses, appearance, habitat and energetic make-up. A direct experience of journeying with the plant through meditation, ingesting a small dose of tincture, flower essence and/or tea and a plant attunement will further foster the connection. There will be time for the integration of this knowledge through the sharing of our experiences and/or journaling. This is plant spirit medicine!

For each class we will open our minds, hearts and senses to new worlds and possibilities through one plant. Join us for an empowering, fun and enlightening way to access our own inherent wisdom and deepen our connection to ourselves and the world around us. No experience is necessary. Class size is limited to ten. Please bring a journal!

January 31 - Cacao (Theobroma cacao) - Cacao has long been considered a “Food of the Gods” and even its Latin name Theobroma translates to exactly that! To this day, the Cacao spirit is considered one of the most powerful deities in Mayan cosmology as well as in many indigenous cultures in Central and South America. Cacao’s medicine is rich, deep, blissful and has been called “truth serum” for the heart. Join us in this exploration of one of the most treasured plants of all times. The "how to journey" portion of this class begins 30 minutes earlier at 1:00 to 1:30.

Febuary 21 - Rose (Rosa spp.) - Everything is coming up Roses! Roses have a wonderful, diverse and long history … about 35 million years to be exact. There is no other plant that has been written about so ardently through time. As a medicine, Rose is unsurpassed in it’s ability to soothe and heal on many different levels. Come experience one of the most gently soothing medicines around.

March 21 - Yellow Pond Lily (Nuphar luteum) - My love affair with Yellow Pond Lily began over the summer when I had the distinct opportunity to meet her in a high Sierra lake in mud up to my knees. Since this time, I have come to consider Nuphar to be one of the most powerful Female Spirit Remedies we have available to us, opening doorways that have long been closed. Join us for a remarkable journey with Nuphar and see what long buried secrets are waiting to emerge.

How to Journey Class.
This is a quick primer for those with no prior journeying experience and for those who would like additional support or have questions regarding journeying . This class is offered 30 min before the Plant Journey class.

Five Elements

Eating with the Elements

Class 4: The Metal Element / Autumn

Sunday, November 23rd from 1:30 to 4:30pm. Each class can be taken independent of the others.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are five seasons, rather than the four that we know of in the West. By observing Nature, the Chinese determined which foods and herbs have a “food as medicine” quality associated with each of these seasons.

Join professional Western Herbalist, Cheryl Fromholzer, and Nutritionist, Certified Aromatherapist and Gourmet Chef, Sarah Bearden, as we present a class for each season throughout the year. In each of our five classes, we will blend the best of East and West as we present local seasonal food and herbs with a Five Element twist. Our classes include lecture, cooking demos, tastings (and take-home goodies) of all the recipes made in class and a folder including all the recipes and notes for the class.

The Metal Element / Autumn is all about “Letting Go” and the Lungs and the Colon. For this class we will be focusing on the upcoming cold and flu season. We will be discussing foods and herbs and remedies that may help to support the immune system as the days get shorter and the nights longer. There are many remedies and recipes we can turn to support our health during the late autumn months. In this class, we will:

  • Discuss nutritional and herbal strategies to support the immune system.
  • Discuss flower remedies that address the emotion of grief which is the emotion associated with the Metal Element.
  • Learn to make an immune-enhancing herbal cough syrup to help with colds and flus.
  • Make a classic immune supporting chicken soup (also affectionately called “Jewish Penicillin”) but this time with a Chinese twist: incorporating immune supportive Chinese herbs into this classic recipe.
  • Learn about a traditional oriental rice recipe that is nourishing and is a real “comfort food” for those who have become ill, and we will discuss the “food as medicine” condiments we can add to it.
  • Make a delicious seasonal gourmet autumn squash soup with an optional crispy bacon and / or crispy sage leaf garnish.
  • NEW! To introduce our upcoming series of Aromatherapy classes coming in the new year: We will learn about essential oils that are used to be supportive during cold and flu season and we will make an aromatherapy inhaler to take home and use when traveling or out and about!

COST: $75 includes handouts, recipes and take-home goodies

A Happy Belly

Insights into Diet and Digestion from the Ayurvedic Perspective with Simone deWinter of Marin Ayurveda

A Four Part Series: Tuesday evenings in February -- 2/3, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24 from 7-9pm

Ayurveda has a very nuanced way of relating to foods, different from the modern nutritionist's approach. Instead of relating to food groups and vitamin and mineral content, it considers the taste and energy of a food, and emphasizes the ability to digest and assimilate its nutrients. How does the quality of each considered taste affect us chemically? Does a food heat us up or cool us down? What is the post-digestive effect of a food?

In this class series, we will create an intimacy with our digestive systems, and a basic understanding of the quality of different foods, herbs and spices, and what they do in our bodies. Each class will focus on visualization, guided meditation, and lecture. You will receive many practical tips and recipes, so that Ayurveda becomes a familiar daily choice.

Simone de Winter has studied yoga and Ayurveda for over twenty years, both in India and the United States. For the last eleven years she has practiced Ayurveda in Marin County. Her website is: marinayurveda.com

COST: $120 for the series or $35 for each individual class. Pre-registration is required to hold your space. Individual clases are available if space permits.
