Cleansing Oils & Toners

with Alice Encinas-Duvernell, Natural Cosmetic Designer & Consultant

Saturday, December 10th from 10am to 4pm

This class is an introduction to alternative ways of deeply cleansing the skin with oil formulas and hydro-based cleansers. This ancient, greatly prized, but forgotten method is an excellent substitute to replace overly abrasive and soap-based facial cleansers. These modern methods of cleansing the skin often result in outbreaks or excessive dryness. Alice will explain the process of how to make efficient recipes based on a choice of ingredients specifically chosen for each skin type. Many precious raw ingredients will be presented and discussed for their properties and benefits. The emphasis will also be put on pH levels (acid and alkaline toners), cleansing protocols, preservation systems and anti-oxidant systems.

In the second part of the class, students will be initiated into the art of making natural, high-quality hydro-tonic toners with botanical ingredients, cosmeceuticals, hydrosols, and hydroxy-acids from fruits and natural acids. These toners will procure in-depth cleansing, which refines and tones the skin and reduces open pores. Students will create their own master recipe spreadsheet and blend a water-based toner and an oil cleanser, based on their own particular skin types. This recipe will also be custom scented with organic essential oil blends.

Students will take home:

  • a 1 oz cleansing oil
  • a 2 oz facial toner

Students are welcome to bring their own botanical extracts, essential oils or favorite toner to use in their recipe or share with the class.

Resiliency and Action in a Crisis

with Dr. Arinn Testa, Psy.D

Tuesday, December 13th from 6:30 to 8:30pm

This free event is the first in a series offered by Dr. Arinn Testa and Gathering Thyme in response to the increasing challenges we find our communities faced with. Please share widely with those you feel would benefit from learning safe and healthy ways to interact with those faced with harrassment, abuse or mental health crises.

A crisis, directly or indirectly, leaves its mark in a kaleidoscope of regions throughout your brain and the impact becomes absorbed by your body. In a crowded park, someone calls for help, so many people keep walking, and only a few are mobilized into action. Both reactions are survival instincts, both are learned, why are we so much more likely to walk by?

The outcome of the recent election had many in shock. Reactions varied greatly, those that mobilized into action sooner, those that bounced back from the initial shock and were able to access thoughtful strategies, have well developed resiliency. They are more likely to survive, but it’s not because they’re born that way, research demonstrates that resiliency is largely learned.

This 2 hour workshop will demonstrate that resiliency can be learned, it can mobilize you in any crisis situation, support you in adjusting to the outcome, and ultimately, impact how you respond in pro-health ways for years to come.

  • We will explore the neuroscience behind the stress response system.
  • You will explore your own history with resiliency and how you cope in a crisis.
  • We will discuss the common reactions to a stressful event or a crisis.
  • You will learn the qualities that are present in resilient people.
  • You will design a plan for how to be the most effective in a crisis.

Dr. Arinn Testa, Psy.D is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who works with individuals, couples, families and groups. To support her clients through their unfolding experience, she integrates an array of holistic methodologies with more than two decades of traditional psychoanalytic training. In addition to her private practice at Gathering Thyme she is Director of Professional Training at Emotional Brain Training (EBT), Chief Program Officer for the Arthur B. Schultz Foundation, and provides stress inoculation and crisis intervention education to first responders. For more information about Arinn, please visit: Arinn Testa

Cacao

Ceremonial Solstice/Equinox Cacao Plant Journey Classes

with Judy Lieblein, Herbalist, Shamanic Practitioner, Reiki Master

December 18th from 12:30 - 4:00pm

Cacao (Theobroma cacao) - Cacao has long been considered a “Food of the Gods” and even its Latin name Theobroma translates to exactly that! To this day, the Cacao spirit is considered one of the most powerful deities in Mayan cosmology. Many indigenous cultures in Central and South America have used Cacao for food and medicine dating back to 1900-900BC. Cacao’s medicine is rich, deep, clarifying, blissful and has been called “truth serum” for the heart.

For this Journey, we will drink a traditional ceremonial dose of Cacao. The format of this class will be a little different as we will be ingesting the Cacao first off as there is a 30-45 min ramp up. The class will include a brief introduction to the ethnobotany and growing habits of Cacao, a plant attunement, an hour long meditation, ceremony and time for sharing and/or journaling to integrate and catalyze the experience. The Cacao Flower Essence will be available as well for those who desire another level of experience. All of this, will be followed by a potluck to help us ground before we leave class. Each Cacao Class will have a specific theme that will connect us more fully with the energies of the season. Join us for a heart-enriching Journey!

Registration for this class through Gathering Thyme IS essential. Due to the nature of this class, class size will be limited. Additional information and instructions will be sent out 5 days prior to class for those who have registered.

Dec. 18- Calling In. We will set up a group altar that will be the focal point of our Journey. Please bring 1 or 2 items that represent or reflect what you would like to call in for the upcoming year. Registration closes Dec. 14th.

Sterilization & Standard Good Manufacturing Practices: Level 1

with Alice Encinas-Duvernell, Natural Cosmetic Designer & Consultant

Sunday, January 22nd 2017, 9am to 12pm

A GMP (good manufacturing process) is a system for ensuring that products are consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards. It is designed to minimize the risks involved in any herbal or cosmeceutical production that cannot be eliminated through testing the final product.

GMP’s cover all aspects of production from the starting materials, sterilization processes, preparation of premises and equipment to the training and personal hygiene of staff. Detailed, written procedures are essential for each process that could affect the quality of the finished product. These methods are important to put in practice in any business that involves products that are internally taken, topically applied or even sprayed in the air or on surfaces. This “standardization” of your procedures gives great tools to protect your customers and your business, but also have a great value in the situation of an FDA audit. The teacher will share a database system and sample sheets in a organized binder to provide documented templates that will allow correct procedures to be documented, showing that they are consistently followed at each step in the manufacturing process - every time a product is made.

A great class for anyone thinking of creating a business around medicinal extracts, food products, cosmetics, but also the business owner that would like to put in place a GMP practice in their growing company.
